Tapestry needles are heavy needles with a large eye and a blunt point for work on embroidery canvas, even-weave material and other loosely woven fabrics, for counted cross stitch, tapestry and needlepoint. Tapestry needles have a blunt end to the point of the needle so that the needle does not catch or pierce the threads of the counted fabric when working from one hole to the next.
The eye sizes are smaller as the number goes higher, so a #18 tapestry needle has a large shaft and a big eye suitable for yarn, while a #22 tapestry needle is shorter, thinner and has a smaller eye.
